The Importance of Waterproof Horse Blankets

The Importance of Waterproof Horse Blankets

When it comes to keeping your horse comfortable, healthy, and protected, the waterproof function of a turnout blanket plays a crucial role—especially during wet and cold weather. Aloga Equestrian Turnout Blankets are designed to provide exceptional waterproofing while maintaining breathability and durability. But why is waterproof functionality so important, and how does it work? On today’s blog we will go through what you need to know.

Why Does Waterproofing Matter?

While horses naturally develop thick coats to insulate them in cold weather, prolonged exposure to rain and wet conditions can compromise this natural protection. A wet horse can lose body heat rapidly, leading to chills, discomfort, or even health issues like hypothermia. Aloga Equestrian blankets create a protective barrier, ensuring your horse stays dry even in the heaviest rain or snow.

Damp conditions can also lead to skin irritations such as rain rot or fungal infections. These issues are often caused by prolonged exposure to moisture, which softens the skin and allows bacteria to thrive. Aloga’s waterproof turnout blankets help prevent this by keeping your horse dry and minimizing direct exposure to wet conditions.

Generally a cold, wet horse is an uncomfortable horse. Wet coats lose insulating properties, making it harder for your horse to stay warm. Aloga blankets not only keep moisture out but they are breathable to also allow sweat and excess heat to escape, maintaining an ideal body temperature for your horse.

How Do Aloga Equestrian Turnout Blankets Stay Waterproof?

We have designed our turnout blankets with advanced waterproof technology, ensuring long-lasting protection. Aloga blankets are made from durable materials such as 600D or 1200D ripstop polyester, which is treated with a waterproof coating. Our blankets have a waterproof rating of 3000mm meaning the outer fabric repels water while remaining flexible, allowing your horse to move comfortably. The waterproof rating of a fabric, measured in millimeters (mm), indicates how much water pressure the material can withstand before water begins to seep through. This rating is determined through a hydrostatic head test, where a column of water is placed on top of the fabric, and the height (in mm) at which water starts penetrating is recorded.

3,000mm waterproof rating → The fabric can withstand a 3,000mm (3-meter) column of water.

What about breathability?

While waterproofing keeps rain out, breathability ensures sweat and moisture inside the blanket can escape. Breathability in fabrics is measured in grams per square meter per 24 hours (g/m²/24h). This rating tells how much moisture (sweat and condensation) can escape through the fabric over a 24-hour period.  Aloga blankets have a breathability rating of 3,000g/m², preventing condensation building inside the blanket and keeping your horse comfortable. This balance of waterproofing and breathability is key to avoiding overheating or dampness from sweat. A 3,000g/m² breathability rating means that 3,000 grams (or 3 kg) of moisture can pass through one square meter of fabric in 24 hours.

Why Does Breathability Matter for Horse Blankets?

  • Prevents Overheating – Horses generate body heat, even in cold weather. A breathable blanket allows excess heat and moisture to escape, helping regulate body temperature.
  • Reduces Sweat Buildup – If a blanket isn’t breathable, sweat and humidity can get trapped, leaving your horse damp and uncomfortable. This can lead to chills or skin issues.
  • Enhances Comfort – A breathable blanket keeps your horse dry from the inside out, ensuring they stay warm without getting clammy.

How to Maintain the Waterproofing of Your Aloga Blanket

To keep your Aloga turnout blanket in top condition:

Brush Off Dirt & Mud Regularly – This prevents debris from breaking down the waterproof coating.
Wash with Horse Blanket-Safe Detergent – Avoid harsh soaps that strip waterproofing.
Air Dry & Reapply Waterproofing Treatment When Needed – Over time, a waterproofing spray can help restore the protective barrier.

Aloga Equestrian turnout waterproof functionality is essential for keeping your horse dry, warm, and comfortable. Their durable waterproof outer shell, breathable design, and secure fit make them a reliable choice for any weather condition. Investing in a high-quality waterproof blanket ensures that your horse stays protected and happy, no matter what Mother Nature throws its way!
