You asked, we are going to answer. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get on Aloga Equestrian when it comes to blanketing your horses
- What is the best blanket weight for my horse based on the temperature?
Choosing the right blanket weight depends on the temperature, your horse’s coat, and their activity level. For mild weather or temperatures above 10°C (50°F), a lightweight sheet or no blanket is often sufficient. In moderate cold (0–10°C or 30–50°F), a medium-weight blanket (150–250g fill) works well for clipped horses. When temperatures drop below 0°C (30°F), a heavyweight blanket (300g+ fill) is ideal for horses that need extra warmth. Always factor in wind, rain, and whether your horse has access to shelter.
Below is the Aloga Equestrian Blanketing/Temperature guide. Please note this guide is intended as a general reference only. It is the responsibility of each horse owner to assess their horse’s individual needs, health, and conditions to determine the most appropriate blanketing approach.
2. Should I use liners or a single heavyweight blanket?
Both approaches have their benefits, but layering with liners offers more versatility. A turnout blanket paired with liners of various weights lets you adjust insulation easily as temperatures fluctuate, and liners are often easier to clean than a full blanket. However, a single heavyweight blanket may be more convenient during consistently cold weather, as it reduces the need for multiple adjustments. For active horses, ensure layers fit securely to prevent shifting or rubbing. Learn more about using Aloga liners here.
3. How can I avoid over-rugging or over-blanketing my horse?
Over-blanketing can cause your horse to overheat, sweat, and even develop skin issues. To avoid this, regularly check your horse’s chest and shoulders under the blanket. If these areas feel warm and dry, your horse is comfortable. Damp or sweaty areas indicate overheating, while cold spots suggest they may need more insulation. Remember that horses naturally handle cooler temperatures better than excessive heat, so it’s safer to under-blanket slightly than overdo it.
4. Does blanketing interfere with my horse’s natural coat growth?
Yes, blanketing too early in the season can prevent your horse from growing a thick winter coat. Horses are naturally equipped to regulate their body temperature, but over-blanketing keeps them too warm, reducing their coat’s ability to insulate. To allow proper coat growth, avoid blanketing until the weather is consistently cold, especially for unclipped horses. More guidance on managing & blanketing horses in cold weather is available here.
5. What’s the best way to choose the right blanket for my horse?
Start by assessing your horse’s individual needs, including their age, health, coat type, and activity level. Consider the weather—horses exposed to wind or rain require waterproof turnout blankets, while those in stables might only need lightweight blankets. Ensure a proper fit to avoid rubbing or discomfort, and prioritize breathable materials that wick moisture. Check out our complete guide to selecting the right blanket for your horse here. A well-fitted blanket should cover the horse’s body without pulling at the shoulders or restricting movement. Review our Insider's guide for everything you need to know on fitting your Aloga blanket.
